Answers to Common Questions About Our Mission and Work
and Quick Guide to Our Programs and Processes
Kijiweni Uplift Youth CBO is a community-based organization rooted in Mombasa, Kenya. We work to uplift young people, women, and vulnerable community members through programs in climate action, community well-being, and culture, arts & innovation. Everything we do is driven by one belief: that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.
We are based in Mombasa County, Kenya. Our programs primarily serve youth, young women and mothers, persons with disabilities, refugees, and other vulnerable community members in our local area — though our impact and partnerships extend across Mombasa County and beyond.
Yes, Kijiweni Uplift Youth CBO is a registered Community Based Organization (CBO) operating within Kenya’s legal and regulatory framework for civil society organizations.
We are supported through a combination of partnerships, grants, community enterprise income, and generous contributions from donors and well-wishers who share our vision for a stronger, more empowered community. We are always open to new partnerships and funding opportunities that align with our mission.
We deliver impact through three thematic areas:
Coko Burn is our sustainable enterprise that converts community waste materials into clean, eco-friendly fuel briquettes — a healthier and more affordable alternative to traditional charcoal and firewood. The project trains youth and women in briquette production and green energy entrepreneurship, while also serving as a community learning and benchmarking hub for other organizations.
Gumzo Kijiweni — meaning “Community Dialogue” — is our monthly forum that creates a safe, open space for community members to discuss critical social issues. Topics include Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) prevention, leadership, civic education, and mentorship. It is a space where voices are heard and community bonds are strengthened.
